Inspired by Japan, the author sets her story in a fishing village, where our heroes Izumi and his son Okito live. Every day, Izumi brings home a few rare and precious fish. These extraordinary fish are golden and called ‘takara’. After a storm, Izumi discovers a miraculous cove. A period of overfishing then begins, gradually damaging the seabed and wiping out the flora and fauna. The ageing hero now lives in isolation near his cove. Every day for many years, he sets about cleaning it up, until the day his son dives into the sea and discovers starfish, pale seaweed and his beloved golden fish, back at last. The Golden Fish is a tale for children, but carries above all an ecological message!
